Certificate in teaching and learning in higher education

This free certificate is for graduate students at York University who are interested to learn more about teaching in post-secondary education. It will consist of two courses, each requiring approximately 20 hours of your time, for a total time commitment of 40 hours for the certificate throughout your graduate studies. Both courses will be available at least once a year, but we plan to offer both each fall and winter term as long as there is sufficient demand, as well as a virtual intensive of each course in the spring/summer. You may take the courses in any order, and anytime they are offered throughout your graduate studies.

The course is designed to bring together graduate students who are interested in teaching and learning, to explore, dialogue, and reflect on teaching and learning in higher education. We hope that you can use this time and information to explore your own teaching identity and support your peers in doing the same. We will discuss different learning theories, teaching practices, and evidence for effective teaching and learning. Topics will include Universal Design for Learning, Equity, Diversity, Decolonization, Inclusion and Accessibility (EDDIA), and Learning Science.

We hope at the end of this course you will have gathered lots of ideas to explore and contribute to your teaching philosophy.

We will offer the course both in-person (in DB 1014*) and virtually (via Zoom) throughout the academic year.

Throughout this course, you will have the opportunity to practice and experience different instructional strategies with peers from across the university. Discussion and reflection will centre around the ways in which your instructional strategies are informed by the teaching and learning literature, and the ways you use the strategies intentionally to align with your teaching beliefs and commitments to Equity, Diversity, Decolonization, Inclusion and Accessibility (EDDIA).
